Sound stuff

1. Slender the arrival (Game), the sound of electronic static creates a heightened scene of fear, as you use a camera to see in the game, this visual juxtaposed with the instant sound effect creates fear in the player. The game also uses speech at the beginning of the levels to inform you what you need to do, creating an instant recognisable goal for the player. The game also uses the sound effect of thunder to create tension throughout the game, as you anticipate the static rather than the thunder itself.

2. War of the worlds (Film), the sound of the fog horn is used to show that the alien space ships are close, like the static, it is used to create fear, as it is played when the audience doesn’t expect it, the exposition is conveyed through the dialogue between the main characters, in which the pitch and tone are changed at different times to convey different emotions such as fear and surprise, this helps us relate to the characters. This sound effect juxtaposed with the fog horn make us even tenser when we hear it as we don’t want anything bad to happen to the characters as we care about them.

 3. Super Mario Bro’s (Game), clink sound, it is used when you collect a coin in the game. This sound became an iconic sound, as it’s iconic for platformers to at least reference it. This sound juxtaposed with the fact that you collect the coins to gain extra lives help to create excitement it the player as he is closer to an extra life.
