Unit 73: Sound for Computer Games

L3 Extended Diploma in Games Design
Unit 73: Sound for Computer Games

a.    Burn dem – Farcry 3, as you are burning down a weed field. I think it worked, because at that point in the game you are given the flamethrower and you are meant to be high whilst killing the enemy.
Power – used in Saints row 3, because at the time, you are jumping out of a helicopter and landing in a penthouse that you take over. I think it worked
Beast – Bioshock infinite, used in the trailer. I think it worked, because the game is set in 1912 Columbia and sends a very political message which fits the theme of the game..
Express yourself – Tony Hawk pro skater 4, randomly as you skate around. I think it worked, because it is a chill mood that is created.
Short changed hero – Borderlands 2, during the intro of the game. I think it worked, because it juxtaposes with the intro itself, in which you are a hero who is hired only to be attacked by your employer.

b.    They help create atmosphere within the game, both through sound effects and music. Often using full orchestral scores, some games soundtracks are so good that you can buy them online. Some using original soundtracks, but also sometimes licenced songs.

c.    A waveform is a physical representation of sound waves that shows the volume and pitch of sound over a period of time.

d.    Foley is the name of editing in everyday sounds like footsteps or creaking floor boards in post-production to enhance the idea of reality in music, games and films.

e.    timbre also known as “tone quality”, is essentially the quality of a sound or tone that separates different types of sound, such as vocals and instruments, in turn also separating things like string instruments, wind instruments, and percussion instruments.
